How Long Does Data Last on an Unpowered SSD?

Ezequiel Albornoz 05 de Diciembre de 2025

Unlike mechanical drives where magnetic data lasts for decades, SSDs store data as electrical charges in floating gates.

If you leave an SSD unplugged for too long (years), the cells may start to lose electrons ("Bit rot"), corrupting the data. This effect worsens with heat. Therefore, SSDs are excellent for daily work but poor for long-term "deep archive" storage in a drawer. For storing photos for 10 years, a mechanical HDD is still safer.
