Data recovery on wet mobiles: Myths and Realities

Ezequiel Albornoz 28 de Noviembre de 2025

Did your cell phone fall into the water? Rice does NOT work for drying internal components. In fact, starch can accelerate corrosion.

Corrosion is the enemy

When water touches the energized motherboard, instantaneous electrolysis occurs, corroding tracks and microscopic components. To recover data, the goal is not to "repair" the phone for further use, but to make it power on long enough to extract information.

The process involves ultrasonic cleaning with isopropanol, repairing main voltage lines (VCC_MAIN) and, in extreme cases, transplanting the memory chip (UFS/eMMC) and the processor to a functional donor board (CPU Swap), since in modern devices the memory is encrypted and paired with the processor.
